Mental Health and well-being in the Primary Phase

This course will look at how we can identify and cater for the mental health and well-being needs of primary phase children and staff  

The course will be led by Gabrielle Wood who is the Mental Health lead and a member of middle management. Gabrielle has completed the Level 2 certificate in ‘Understanding children and young people’s mental health’

This twilight session will be delivered by Sara Boyce, Headteacher with over 10 years experience as Head/Deputy in a range of primary schools and settings. Currently work with other schools in Buckinghamshire as a Consultant Headteacher for school improvement.

  • How to work with your team to create effective performance targets and motivate them
  • How to develop yourself as a coach and mentor
  • How to hold your team to account whilst balancing workload

Science for Year 4

Wednesday, 05 June 2019 4:00 pm -6:00 pm

This course is aimed at Year 4 Science teachers and Science leaders

The course with cover:

  • Animals, including Humans – the digestive system
  • Sound – how sound is made and how it travels, drawing links between the object that made the sound and the type of sound produced
  • Electricity – an opportunity to bring along your own equipment (this is optional – we will also have some available) to practice setting up simple circuits and identifying conductors and insulators.

The course will be lead by Science teachers from Oakgrove School. 


Psychology of Learning in the Primary Phase

Phonics for teaching assistants

Sam Wadeson one of Innovate’s SLEs. she is a Phonics leader and foundation teacher with a successful track record as EYFS and KS1 leader.

This twilight will cover:

  • Understanding phonics terminology
  • Increased knowledge on expectations across Foundation and Key Stage One
  • Practical resources and ideas to support phonics teaching in school
  • Application of phonics in reading and writing and how to support children with this
  • Increased subject knowledge on how to structure a phonics session
  • Ideas to support with differentiation and challenge

The session will mainly be based around practical games and ideas which support early phonics development.


Science for Year 5

This course is aimed at Year 5 Science teachers and Science leaders

The course will cover:

  • Properties and Changes of materials – Solubility, Conductivity, Changes of State and evidence that a Chemical Change has taken place.
  • Forces – Gravity, Friction, levers, Pulleys and Gears
  • Planning an Investigation – suggestions of ways to fulfil the requirement to show students are ‘working Scientifically’

This course will be lead by Science teachers at Oakgrove School


Primary Subject Leadership

This course will provide an overview of Leading a Curriculum area in the Primary Phase including:

  • How to co-ordinate a subject area
  • How to Liaise with your designated governor
  • How to collect evidence and prepare for an OFSTED visit

Course Leader: Tara Trail 

Tara is a Senior Deputy Head Teacher at Middleton Primary School which was awarded Outstanding in their last OFSTED inspection.


Science for Year 6

Wednesday, 19 June 2019 4:00 pm -6:00 pm

This course is aimed at Year 6 Science teachers and Science leaders.


The course will cover:

  • Living Things and their habitats – Classification of Living Organisms
  • Animals Including humans – The Circulatory System and the effect of exercise on it.
  • Light – Refraction and bending light, Making a Periscope
  • Electricity – An opportunity to bring your own equipment along (though this is optional – we will also have some available) to practice setting up circuits to investigate the effect of Voltage on components in a circuit and the construction of other useful circuits (eg Burglar Alarms)

Taking learning outdoors

This twilight session will be delivered by Hayley Seal, SENCO at New Bradwell C.E School. It will focus on:

  • Setting up an outdoor area
  • Working with younger children outside
  • Working with SEN children outside

Rocket Launchers Make and Take

Thursday, 27 June 2019 4:30 pm -6:00 pm

Build your own “rocket” launcher. You can then use the compressed air launcher in the classroom to engage students with the design of the rockets. Through modifications such as adding fins or altering the shape of the nose cone, students can theorise and then try out how a rocket’s flight path can be affected.
